For the most recent year -- 2009 -- MMS says it received $7.6 billion in combined royalties for oil, natural gas and coal, plus roughly $2.3 billion more in other revenues, for a total of $9.9 billion.

This reminds me of the damage done by cable companies to the streets all over the US. On a smaller scale, ATT (or was it another company) tried to wired the entire country with fiber optic cable, digging the streets burying miles and miles of cable, then patch the ditch. For many many years the streets looked so ugly with narrow white ribbons along side of the sidewalks when the entire road was asphalt black. The cable suns to the outside of every house in my area, and yet, the project has been abandoned.
