No it wasn't, or at least you make no real case for it. The same sort of speculation can happen without mergers, and did happen with non-merged companies (not implying that they never had any mergers, but that they didn't merge a bank with an investment bank).

Hair splitting. If we had one or the other, the problem likely wouldn't have gotten so big.

Its no hair splitting exactly because the repeal on the prohibition against mergers did just about nothing to make the problem bigger.
