"Real men have fabs" is the taunt Jerry Sanders, a founder and former CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), is said to have lobbed at upstart chip companies that designed products but outsourced the manufacturing. It became a common Silicon Valley refrain in the 1990s.

Not anymore.

Real companies without fabs (industry parlance for chip-fabricating plants) have seen revenue grow faster than for many of their manufacturing-capable cousins.
