Maybe in Libertarian circles it is questionable. In the real world, not so much.

Not even close, Tim. The South was very hierarchical. Everything depended on your place in society. And you place was reflected in the clothes you wore, your vocabulary and even your accent. And one thing that was absolutely and unshakably was that if you were white, no matter how few teeth you had, you were still considered better than anyone who was black. And those who were in power encouraged this because it countered their single biggest threat, which was the poor.

The laws resulted from the attitudes, the attitudes weren't created by the laws.
