I think he's still pretty much a 'lock' to win in the Fall... but his candor (actually saying what he believes in --- VERY un-political <g>) is apt to cause him some problems still with the general public I expect. For example, his consistently held view that government should not have any say in the way that businesses conduct their affairs, (his comments about believing that the Civil Rights Act was not constitutional --- thus that it should be perfectly legal for private business to discriminate in public accommodations if it wanted to... the old Woolsworth diner thing all over again, black and white water faucets... and his comments that the administration's public criticism of BP over the Gulf oil spill mess was "un-American", betraying a bit of a big-business bias I think), are likely to produce some considerable degree of ongoing political hot water for the candidate. With his view that government has no regulatory right with respect to business' conduct... if he truly means that business has a right to discriminate based on skin color (and government has no right to do anything about it) then it would be equally fair to ask: 1) Are minimum wage laws unconstitutional? (To be consistent, he would have to answer in the affermative.) 2) Are CHILD LABOR laws also unconstitutional? Would it be legal for a textile mill, (for example), to employ nine or ten year old children to work at the mills like in the 'good old days'? Etc. Could I, (in my business), refuse to serve you if I didn't like your religion? Your accent? (If the government has no right to regulate to provide for the commonweal and equality of rights in society... then that would seem to be a pretty categorical position.)
