I believe you're talking about La Mezquita, one of the most spectacular buildings in the world. ( sacred-destinations.com ). The original Christian Church was built over a Roman temple. After the Muslims were defeated, a Christian cathedral was built in the interior of the mosque. When I visited some 30 years ago, our guide told the group that the cathedral was built by Muslim craftsmen, who inscribed in Arabic on the outside of the church "There is but one God and his prophet is Muhammad."

Regardless of what you think of Islamic Culture today, in the 8th Century they were height of civilization in Europe.
