It's a no-win situation, and I don't think anyone is suggesting that Obama is holding back on some solution for the leak itself. But BP has acted with impunity throughout this: not allowing reporters in (with the help of the coast guard), using toxic dispersant (that they profit from) in direct refutation of EPA directives, toeing BP's line on the spread of the oil (helping to deny the underwater plumes), taking a MONTH to compel BP to assess the severity of the gusher, etc... not to mention, the dept of the interior is STILL issuing permits for more drilling! There is a report on BP's safety report for gulf spills that just surfaced today. It is a joke, and was clearly never read by regulators. It's from June of 2009. Sure, there's holdovers from the last administration in there, but when Bush came in, he fired everyone and put in his own people from the start. And this isn't republicans blocking appointments, this is Obama's hire of Ken Salazar, an easy going 'bi-partisan solution' who helped enable this disaster by not cleaning house. All in all the administration is going to take a serious beating on this one. But they need to decide whether it will be for "un-american treatment" of global oil corporations and their contractors, or whether they end up looking like they were in big oil's pocket all along. As a huge fan of Obama's and life long lefty, I am really unsure as to what it will be, and it saddens me beyond belief.
