There are some reasons why we would expect violent crime rates to drop. (Not a complete list, just a few things off the top of my head)

Demographics - The population is aging. Older people are less likely to be criminals and esp. less likely to be violent criminals.

Guns - More people are armed.

Incarceration - We might take it to far in some cases (like the "war on drugs" which fills up our prisons), but putting criminals behind bars means they aren't out committing crimes (well they may attack someone in prison, I'm not sure how that shows up in the crime rates)

Working the other way

Recession - Probably overrated as a reason for crime, but still all else being equal you would expect some increase in crime from bad economic times.
