The advantage I see of a "top kill" at such depths is that there is a significant amount of water column pressure from the top and minimal counteracting flotation pressure at that depth. The only concern then is the gushing oil pressure. That sounds a little better. I keep imagining a large pipe with a major leak............how hard it is to force the water back into the pipe in order to seal the pipe. That's essentially what they are doing....forcing the oil back into the pipe in order to seal it. Maybe there is a better chance of pulling it off with the water column pressure that you reference. I presume that they are also using the domes they h ave already lowered as one of the components of the mix of the "top kill". All I've read is that if the top kill doesn't work, they will try to put the smaller 'hat' over the leak.
