There where other WANs, but not ones that where across so many different organizations and countries. (Your claiming it as the Internet only from the late 80s, by that time the Internet was already extensive). Also this particular WAN (if you consider it that) is the same one that we both use to type our posts in to SI today. Its the Internet now, it was the Internet then, just as I was the same person when I was a little kid (and would still be the same person now, even if I had changed my name in the past).
