Probably no step up basis unless they retro-activate the estate tax for 2010? Otherwise, looking for original cost basis could be a whole lot of trouble.

Had a pretty wealthy client pass away this week, had to tell his son I have no idea what he will wind up with in terms of estate taxes, and hold off on selling securities cause I don't know if there is a step up in basis either, lol. Congress better get cracking on this stuff.

thought the basis would be what it was on the day of his death -- even if he has a ton of money -- that only applies up to some threshold?? First 2 Million should be free of estate taxes if the guy wasn't an idiot??
