Ground control to Scott:

Last time I ran a defrag 2 hrs plus. Run scandisk 2-3 times per week.
Sure don't want to wait for that every time I boot. Most PCs designed for network use have remote power-up feature. Upgrades and routine maintenance work can be done during off hours without running around. NCs don't have as many problems cause no hard drive inside. Eliminating floppy drives and CD ROM drives eliminates a source of major difficulties.

Morale costs? I would think so. Any employee who is used to having a full plate of software tools is going to be quite upset with anything less. The guy who likes to carry a couple of floppys home to work on over the weekend will be put out that he can't anymore. The power user wannabe will find the network way to slow and lacking in richness and depth. And on and on.

A fair chunk of that $2000 figure has got to be for Corporate Licenses and software upgrades. Fixed costs if you will.

Oh yes. You're flying way over my lowly head. Have we got anyone here with real networking knowledge so I don't have to make so many guesses?

Disclaimer: I can't speak for Major Scott but on networking my experience is near zilch so I don't know what I'm talking about.
All is IMO.
