Yep, the individual direct tax burden is pretty low. That's overcome by massive debt and a plethora of indirect taxes and fees. And now there are rumblings of a VAT being added, another hidden tax that can be manipulated invisibly.

While the "average" individual tax may be around 20%, the actual amount spent on gov't is at least 40%. Don't think that the amount of tax listed on your annual 1040 represents your actual taxes paid.
