Lucius, Re: the electric motor

The development of the electric motor came partly as a result of having seen what steam "motors" or "engines" were capable of. The steam engine created mechanical energy by harnessing one form of energy, utilizing the physical transformation of water into steam, while the electric motor harnessed electromagnetic energy by transforming it to mechanical energy.

Microprocessors transform electromagnetic energy into information.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement:

"We haven't even begun to imagine the implications of having todays supercomputer power available for a few cents."

"supercomputer power available for a few cents."

I don't know what time-frame you are looking at, but it's going to be a little while yet before Intel will be able to be that generous, and still be able to make one or two cents profit per processor. I believe Frito-Lay's chips are priced at least at that price, and we EAT the darn things by the handful.

Perhaps Uncle Alan was right. Too much irrational exuberance out there. -GG-
