The reference was actually to an Orwellian society, which represented a warning rather than an ideal.

But now that I think of it, the notion of "Atlas smiled" is more of an unintended confirmation of Rand's philosophies, rather than a redefinition thereof. The author of that notion fulfills the role of Rand's "altruist," which she considers to be destructive to society.

Indeed, the "altruists" in Atlas Shrugged seem more like parasites who can't think for themselves, but rather survive off of the industrialists while at the same time insulting them. Seems like an apt description of a modern day liberal.
