this seems comical somehow

BP (BP -4.2%) injects pieces of rope, shredded tires, golf balls and other material into the blowout preventer, the latest stage of its "top kill" procedure to plug the Gulf well. Much of the injected kill mud was flowing out into the ocean instead of going down the well, so it is hoped that the debris will plug the gaps and keep more of the mud in the well.
