Advertising.

"We can make the products, but we must further create the public who desire them."

And so they did. There was a great room in the Pompidou art gallery in Paris. All it contained was a huge picture of the aisles of an American 99 cent store.

Rows and rows of pop, twizzlers, potato chips, kitchen bric-a-brac and the like.

It was... compelling.

TBS, "I do not think it is that cut and dry... what about culture in NA dictates that we must be so consumption oriented.. work our asses off to buy an iPad and a Beemer ... learned behaviour ?"

Yes, it's culturally imposed, though a lot of that may originate from Madison Avenue.

"What about us that opt out despite floating that same sea ?"

That's one of the benefits of living in North America. We have a multi-culture environment offering more choices. If you grow up in a Latin American fishing village, or farming community, you don't have options. There are exceptions, of course, but generally speaking, cultural imperatives pretty much dictate how people across the world live, and yes, it's learned/instilled behavior.
