McGinniss has evolved into an odd bird. He published his first book, The Selling of the President, in 1969 when he was 26. He had gotten behind the scene access to Richard Nixon’s 1968 campaign and his book, which was a best seller, documented the creation and marketing of the “New Nixon.” I still have my hardcover copy of the book. The book was very controversial at the time. Republican were horrified by what they viewed as a violation of journalistic ethics and Democrats were horrified by the thought that Nixon was still the same “Old Nixon.” My thought at the time: “Thank God for makeovers and disingenuous marketing.” That thought has not changed. As I have said before, if given the choice today of voting for the dead Nixon or the live McGovern, I would not hesitate to pull the lever for Nixon. Needless to say, a dead Nixon trumps a dead Humphrey.

His next nonfiction book was Going to Extremes, an account of a year that he spent in Alaska. I enjoyed that book, though it was not well received in Alaska. His biggest financial success was probably Fatal Vision, an account of the Jeffrey MacDonald murder trial. MacDonald opened up to him and gave him access to his legal team because he thought that McGinniss was sympathetic to his case. MacDonald got a rude awakening and still sits in prison for murdering his pregnant wife and two young daughters. That was the last book that I read by McGinniss.

He also wrote a biography on Ted Kennedy that drew the wrath of the Kennedy worshipers.
