That is funny that they are using booms as psychological ornaments like a pretty necklace rather than to actually stop oil.

Apparently not much of a problem: <So MQ, do we have a problem, or do we not have a problem with oil on the beaches? >

There was some that got into a swamp somewhere, but the beaches are apparently not coated. Barack went to have a look at found some tarry balls which are of course nothing to do with the oil slick. Maybe they are bits of old grease which had fallen off something on one of the many rigs or maybe a ship washing their decks and it's open gear grease from winches.

When I had a look at winds and currents at the beginning, it looked as though the oil would be washed up the Gulf Stream after a few circles around in the Gulf of Mexico.

Is there a problem? The total area of spill isn't even much of the Gulf of Mexico - just a tiny bit. I'd have thought there are lots of places to fishing without getting into the slicks.

It seems odd that they are using mud to stem the flow. I'd have thought they'd want to use heavy stuff like old ball bearings of high density and low surface area to weight so that they would not be washed up the well by the upward flowing oil and gas.

A 10mm ball bearing would fall straight through gas and fairly well through oil as viscous as the slick and submarine oil looks. I suppose they know what they are doing though.

There are quite a lot of boats out there collecting oil. Maybe there just isn't much getting near the beaches and swamps.
