WHY are the environmentalists so able to make these companies go out so far so that they have to dig down more than a mile in the ocean?

While this post is not directly related to oil, here is my answer to your query.

It is all about the MONEY. The more the environmentalists bitched, the more they received donations and government dollars. To provide you an example, I and others spent over two years in an effort to get something done for the good of the San Francisco Bay Area populus.

We were opposed by an endless array of environmental nut cases.

They had their beret wearing flute players concerned about "the birds in the marsh"; their oversized Momma Cass women concerned "about the affect on fish species in the Bay"; their Sierra Club whiners concerned "about a loss of less than .0000001 percent of the Bay" for a landfill....

We met monthly, and sometimes more often, to try work out an agreement. The result was zip, nadda, blank. They never intended to agree to ANYTHING. They won, the Mayor folded, and the people of the Bay Area lost. The Hearst news reporting media failed their readers, as usual.

The only good thing that I can report to you is that Willie Brown, then Mayor, always put on a great feedbag for the lunch break of an all day meeting.

This is what environmentalists do and this is how they do it - OBJECT, OBJECT, OBJECT.
