There was an hour long show about Barnum on PBS or the History channel or somewhere. They claimed there was an old Yankee tradition of trying to put one over on your neighbor. Yankees took pride at not being easily fooled so when someone did they gave them credit. I'm not talking about cheating people out of their farms. More like practical jokes. That was the spirit in which Barnum's flim flamery was taken. Interestingly, he didn't get into the circus business till he was fairly old.
