Great post Steve. I agree the MPU market is already showing signs of becoming multifaceted. The new "glue" to hold things together is becoming the internet rahter than a generic Windows interface and USB, maturation of fat software driven MPU architectures, lower price points all around (except for newer innovations such as DVD)and much more scalable operating systems will help broadden the palying field to encompass a much wider slection of products and new product categories, such as NCs and WebTV. Today we are talking about products that are becoming reality and drawing significant sales that were hardly in existance a year ago. In a couple of years I'm some new wrinkles will have occured. If Mighty Intel can get it wrong on the sub $1000 PC market, I expect we'll ignore some things that will help shape the computing world of hte future.
