Police release video of men laughing as they take Calgary bus for joyride By: Shannon Montgomery, The Canadian Press 31/05/2010 5:32 PM \| Comments: 0 CALGARY - Surveillance video from a stolen Calgary bus taken for a joyride shows two men chuckling and yelling as they zoom around corners and consider cutting across someone's lawn. But police officers in the city aren't laughing over a dangerous prank they say could have seriously hurt someone. Police say the two men hopped on board the idling bus when the driver stopped for a bathroom break early Sunday. They spun through a southeast neighbourhood and bashed the bus into at least two parked cars. The released video shows one of the men laughing while the other spins the vehicle's massive wheel as the bus zooms along a curvy residential street. "The two suspects, while driving the bus, were very wanton and reckless. It appears as though they were speeding," said acting Staff Sgt. Kristie Verheul. "The video does indicate there are times in the travels that they were all over in the bus, hard turns were happening, and there was some property damage." Police were called when the bus was found damaged and abandoned about half an hour later. Verheul said police haven't identified the culprits but hope the clear footage will lead to tips from the public. She said comments from one of the men led investigators to believe he's familiar with the area. She said she's not worried about copycat joyrides, but admitted that it is upsetting for her to watch the men. "I suppose it does frustrate me, because obviously this incident has put Calgary citizens at risk. As you can see from the video, if somebody was crossing a road or backing out of their driveway, there were some public safety concerns that were created from the way that they were driving." Calgary Transit officials have said they're reviewing a policy that allows drivers to leave their buses running for up to five minutes. winnipegfreepress.com
