We Americans have demanded this offshore drilling continue; we are all addicts.
Well, almost all of us. Not you, of course.
My name is Mike, and I am an oilcoholic.

"The oil industry is a major contributor to the excruciating pain in the Middle East,"

Oil is the (only) contributor, not the "oil industry". Our drug; those people are camping in our marijuana pach.

BTW, the oil industry probably means Exxon, et al. Exxon is the 17th largest oil company in the world. The 16 ahead of it are NOCs; National Oil Companies...Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Venezuela, whatever. What we think of as the oil industry is just a bunch of kids playing at the company picnic.

"A simple mandate of 60-miles per gallon..." Yup; a video game accomplishment...hit the orange button when the light starts flashing, and 225M + vehicles will get 300% mileage improvment overnight.

good post. but where I disagree is here:

These oil barons, in concert with Wall Street are killing America in slow motion...and most citizens don't fully comprehend what's really going on.

as you said earlier in the post, it is on us. oil barons would not be barons if we didn't crave and devour their product. and too many are willfully ignorant... ala the outcry over the Gulf when it is not unknown what is going on in Nigeria, it's just so easy to close our eyes to it when it's far away and happens to 'those people'. (and, yes, I have my guilt in such things).

it's a bit like stopping between sniffs of cocaine to bemoan the violence of a Jamacian drug lord.

as to Wall Street... ya, they are just messed up people.

We need to tap into our natural resources including oil and we need to do so safely. Safety first. The operation of controlling the leak is pretty high tech. That we have such high tech technologies is a pointer to great thinking minds. But one thing they did not think out fully is the issue of safety and "risk assessment and containment".

The "risk assessment and containment" approach should apply to not only oil drilling but also to other endeavors such as space exploration, manufacture of drugs, processing and packaging of foods etc.

Responsible drilling.
