If the liabilities they've incurred* drive them bankrupt over time, so be it.

Like it or not that's a values decision, and probably political and/or judicial. Right now Florida tourism is off. Rational or not there is big money being lost, and who is responsible? Does BP have to pay wages for the the fishermen, the charter boat owners, the waitresses out of work? If there is a large wildlife kill do they have to pay for that... for generations of wildlife? Goes on and on.

* And the damage to their prestige as a partner. This is going to be substantial and long term and few are thinking about it except in boardrooms and government oil ministries around the world.

And the cost of increased regulation and liability for the entire industry can't make them the most popular kid in class.

I personally think they are toast. They "screwed the pooch".
