I know about the Oil Drum - it became popular with peak oil folks. There are a handful of industry folks who post on it and a whole lot of uninformed ones, kind of like SI. The posters there don't necessarily have any special insight on what happened.

I saw the Robert O'Dowd article and its just innuendo.

Cheney almost certainly would not get involved in anything on that level.

And the whole premise that Cheney, due to his past HAL ties, would have a motive to prevent something like acoustic switches from being required doesn't make sense. For all you know, HAL could have decided to provide the acoustic switches you're talking about. They're an oil service and supply company - they provide technology solutions to oil companies - that sounds like it could be right up their alley though there are lots of other companies who are in the business too.
