You can't see beyond next year's profits.

My post had pretty much nothing to do with next years profits.

You can't see the strategic value of having untapped oil right off our coast if we ever need it in an emergency

If we don't drill it, than its not available in an emergency. Even if we knew exactly where to drill, and faced no regulatory delays, and had the drilling capacity and workers ready to go, drilling would take months. In real world situations significant extra oil would take years to come on line in a big way, maybe over a decade.

If greed is your motive

You keep talking about greed. What do you mean by that. If you mean desire to use available resources, than greed is not something wrong. If you mean an evil desire to unjustly take and control resources, this has nothing to do with greed.

then keeping the oil in place will result in even higher value ten or twenty years hence

1 - Money today is worth more than the same amount of money in ten or twenty years. And this isn't even considering inflation. Adjust for inflation and its still true, $X in real dollars today is worth more than $X real dollars in 10-20 years. Consider only nominal dollars and the point is likely to be a stronger one.

2 - Not necessarily see inflationdata.com

3 - Again it takes time to get the oil flowing in quantity. If we want to get a lot of this oil in 10 years we need to start developing things now.

4 - Delay can mean denial. Delay for 10-20 years can be renewed at the end of that period. The forces in opposition to drilling might grow stronger rather than weaker.
