Commissioner for agriculture and industries GOP candidate Dale Peterson's Internet popularity did not translate into votes in Tuesday's primary election.

John McMillan and Dorman Grace appeared headed for a runoff for the Republican nomination to the post.

With 61 percent of the vote reporting, McMillian had almost 38 percent of the vote and Grace had 35 percent. Peterson trailed with a little more than 27 percent.

Peterson's campaign ad, "We are Better Than That," brought an onslaught of media attention to the candidate and the state.

The campaign ad showed the candidate mounting a horse and brandishing a rifle has received more than 1.2 million views on Youtube.

Posted: May 29, 2010 12:35 PM CDT

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - When the news of the oil spill and its effects on the local environment and wildlife left many wondering what to do, three Ocean Springs Middle School students put into action an idea that could help.

Amber Welch, Cady Cooper and Alyssa Baacke have created a donations box to benefit both The Institute for Marine Mammals and The Wildlife Center. The box has been placed at the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA, 1810 Government Street, Ocean Springs.

The items being collected are:

Dawn soap
Paper Towels
Bleach
Old Towels/Rags
5-Gallon Buckets
Sheets
Pet Carriers
Heating Pads
Disposable Gloves
Heavy-Duty Garbage Bags

Anyone interested in donating items is welcome to drop them off at the donations box during regular operating hours. The box is decorated with artwork created by the three girls and which depicts their favorite Gulf scenes.

"We're looking for anything that can be used to clean up wildlife affected by the oil spill," said Cady Cooper.

"We were worried about the oil spill effecting the environment and the wildlife and we wanted to do something about it," added Amber Welch.
