I think the problem here is that there is a drill pipe inside the riser which is binding the saw. They can support the riser on cables to take the strain off, but that doesn't help with the the second pipe.

BP/Coast Guard now saying that the saw blade has been freed up. Presumably they're going to take another crack at sawing off the riser. Wonder how they'll change their approach this time?


The problem is that there is a great deal of frustration around this matter. Its not surprising that a saw got stuck while robots try to saw their way through metal a mile under the water. But with frustration so thick, people have little patience for any screw up. This too will pass.
