Ahhh... Yes and no. Technically you're sources are wrong but functionally they're significantly correct, but for other reasons.

There's a fabulous book called "Money, Whence it came, Where it went" by John Kenneth Galbraith. It's a great, funny, read and very enlightening.

You could also try "Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets" by Mishkin but it's less fun and probably won't give a lot more really useful information than Galbraith's book.
