Anyone who has ever coached basketball knows what a unique person coach Wooden was.

He never called a timeout to diagram a last minute play. He figured his players were prepared through rigorous practices and knew what to do in that situation.

He didn't yell at his players during the game. He stayed on the bench.

He never swore, unless you count, "goodness, gracious, sakes alive!"

He never talked about winning. He said if his players played to the best of their ability and gave their best efforts, they would be happy with the results.

In the middle of his run of 10-NCAA crowns in 12-seasons, he usually wrote his anticipated result of the season on a piece of paper before it started, slipping it into a drawer in his desk until the end of the season. There were times when he wrote 32-0 before they played a single game. It wasn't arrogance either. It was what he thought they were capable of achieving based upon the talent he and his team had and the talent he was facing.

Like coach Wooden, to start our first practice this year I talked to my team about putting on socks correctly and tying their shoes correctly. Any kid who had a shoe come untied during a game or practice had to run suicides after that.

The school our children go to handed out Wooden's Pyramid of Success at the start of the year. It is used in their programs.

There will never be another coach Wooden.
