Completely off any topic and out of place.

Someone I know wrote a book, kids book, kind of. Actually I know more people who have written books, but I never bothered to read them. Anyway, I did read this one as we decided to make it the next reading for our intergenerational book group. Going in I figured, yeah, okay, it’ll probably be alright (it was published, after all) but it’ll be embarrassing to point out the slow parts or where she used something awkward, whatever. And the first page didn’t grab me, particularly, but by the second page I was engaged.

It only got better and better.

Book is Dark Life, author is Kat Falls.

I probably should have had higher expectations going in, but I mostly know her as Declan and Connor’s mom, both of her boys being around Jon’s age. Her husband is Bob Falls, artistic director of the Goodman Theater. Both are pillars of the Unitarian Church and the broader community generally and she did sell the movie rights (and I can see why) and get a contract to write 3 more. Anyway, if any of you have kids or grandkids 10-15 years old, or of any age who just like a rollicking adventure, check it out. I enjoyed the hell out of it and I’m 60 (although young at heart, I like to think).
