Someone asked why BP couldn't drop a mile long pipe or hose - something wider than the riser - over the riser and let the crude flow up to the surface where it could be corralled by booms into a small area and pumped into ships.

It seems these funnels they're using try to channel the crude into small diameter pipes, creating backpressure that causes the crude to backup and out...

I tried to explain that even a wide pipe wouldn't contain oil flowing from a 5000psi leak, that it wouldn't "flow" up fast enough and most would wind up being forced out the bottom... but I don't know jack about this stuff.

It's so simple I would think BP considered it but concluded it wouldn't work...
