I agree that lots of soldiers there is not helping either, so that tradeoff would appear to be a plus.

But look at our own literature and psych about faceless governments with an iron grip: 1984, Brave New World,...Blade Runner, etc. If Americans feel that way, arguably the rest of the world does as well. At some point technology spreads to the rest of the world, then we might take a different view about faceless actors who can send death remotely.
