The problem with being a doormat is that you end up getting pushed too far, and in the end it may be too late for diplomacy, and may take a big shooting war in order to protect important interests.

The Russians know this well. They recovered, and there is simply no way NATO would be able to attack a friend of theirs. There would be no bombing of Belgrade. This is so obvious that the thought wouldn't even occur to anyone these days. And when militant thoughts are controlled, that's called peace.
