On the small world thing, I worked as a permit ironworker for a short time till I got my college degree and my corporate job. By the time I got my apprentice card, I was done with it and never worked on another ironworking job. I remember people talking about going to a local in west TX that would sell a union book. For some reason there were a bunch of ironworkers from Wickliffe KY that had done that.
