Well, my reaction would be the same. What is the logic here? Oil companis should not drill if they cannot stop a disaster from any means, of this magnitude.

The world and we simply do not need that oil. Just some miner conservation or higher gas prices, or taxes could displace that much oil.

And as we are at peak oil, all the more reason to get oil prices higher any way we can, to get people use to using less oil.

I see I read your question wrong. In the case of an earthquake then we should have all hands on deck to clean it up and stop it. That would be where a strong government response is necessary.
