Holiday Happiness Heading
for All-Time High

November 7, 1997

According to the NPD Group, early sales results
look extremely favorable for a booming holiday
season in the videogame industry.

For the first two weeks in October approximately 340,000
videogame consoles were sold at retail in the US. The number is a
massive increase over the same period the month before and signals
a strong start to the fourth quarter according the the NPD Group
(who is responsible for generating the TRSTS report each month).
The prediction follows outstanding performance by the industry for
the first three quarters which were up 60 percent in 1997 over the
same period in 1996.

Ed Roth, president of leisure activities tracking services for NPD
said: "With videogames always selling best during the fourth
calendar quarter, October often is a clear indicator of industry sales
for the remaining holiday season."

Total US retail sales volume for videogames reached $3.7 billion in
1997 and Roth believes that the industry could be heading towards
an all time high of between $5.2 and $5.3 billion for 1997. "The
momentum is likely to continue into 1998, where we should see a
continuing upwards sales trend for the 32/64-bit generation of
videogames.

According to NPD, of the top 25 games sold in the first two weeks
of October, 16 were for the PlayStation. At the same time, the
number one game in that period was Nintendo's Goldeneye 007.
Third party publishers with games that sold well in the first two
weeks of the fourth quarter include: Acclaim, Activision, ASCII,
Capcom, EA, Fox, GT, Konami, Midway, Namco and Ocean.
