Cisco,

Thanks. I want to respond to all your points after I've had time to think about them a little more. But one caught my eye -- the

7. Have you taken the advice of Solomon and diversified your risk? (Eccl. 11:2)

Is that the "cast your bread on the waters" passage? I'll look it up when I'm done here. But just thinking out loud --- I thought this probably relates more to giving than investing was my first thought --

but ....

giving really is investing in the most worthwhile cause of all, God's kingdom --- Cisco, I pray that I have been more wise in this endeavor than investing. I do try to spread my meager gifts around according to His purposes. I feel good about this -- not because I think this is righteous or anything like that, but today we have a unique opportunity to give to further his causes around the world. In this light the Asian currency crisis is a wonderful oppty -- dollars get a lot in those other currencies.

I want to share something else with you for what it's worth. Up until a little while ago I had a couple of accounts that I was investing. One is my family's money (it's all the Lord's actually, right), but the other one was money that my mother left and wanted managed for some time until my father was no longer living. The income from the investments were to be provided to myself and my siblings until that time or until such a time as my Dad would say he had no need of the funds ---

in managing the twp sets of funds I was always a little more carefree in managing the funds my mother left as not all the benefits would accrue to me -- i engaged in a little more risky behavior, was less diversified, etc. This account administered for the sake of others has by a long shot out-performed my own account.

Lesson for me: Anything done for the service of others is more apt to receive a blessing from God, even if the mechanics are wrong.

I think motives are key before any style issues come into play. Options are a zero sum game -- sometimes that has bothered me and I am not as comfortable trading them as some -- so after some losses and a few wins I'm not strongly inclined to do so, except in some rare cicrumstances -- but I won;t judge those who do.

Hard work and prudent management of ones funds is important and something God desires of each one of us --- but there's a lot of history of God blessing those who trust in Him disproportionately (Jacob, Daniel, Joseph) --- doesn't mean he always will -- I'm not preaching a prosperity gospel here -- just saying recognize God's hand in your being where you are.

I will look at the other verses and respond. I really appreciate your taking some time to think out loud about the issue.

Barry
