Shelby County hires Texas firm to help save energy at courthouse By Malcomb Daniels -- The Birmingham News June 07, 2010, 10:00AM The Shelby County Commission has hired a Texas-based company to make improvements to the county courthouse that are supposed to lead to energy savings for the county. The county will pay Schneider Electric Buildings Americas $1.3 million to handle the work. Half of the money paid to the company will come from $660,000 in federal stimulus money that the county landed for the energy savings project. Switching to more efficient lighting and heating and cooling systems are some of the ways the county is looking to save. Schneider said that it will be able to produce around $108,000 in annual savings. The company also says it will be able to reduce the county's annual carbon footprint -- greenhouse gases that are emitted into the environment -- at the courthouse by 53 percent. Reed Prince, manager of the county's department of general services, said Schneider's energy savings will probably be closer to $100,000 a year. "They're good at doing this," Prince said. "They've got a good track record." Shelby County, Jefferson County and the city of Birmingham were among cities and counties in the state awarded stimulus money that was set aside to be used for energy savings projects. Shelby County studied the possibility of using its stimulus funds at the courthouse, the county's administration building in Columbiana, and the county services building in Pelham. Officials eventually decided the courthouse is where the county thought it could get the most energy savings with the stimulus funds available. blog.al.com
