Your explanation is the toothpaste made the toothpaste. Maybe the toothpaste did make the toothpaste but there is not one iota of evidence for that. When we go back to non-life we have non-life. We don't have demons and we don't have gods. We have the unknown. The relationship between inorganic energy and organic energy and how they transpose is still unknown but it is no excuse for taking stupid pills 24 hours a day. What we know for sure (and this is what is important) is that religions are superstitions developed by tribal minds and they are not good for normal people. They cause harm to the world and they are a blight on the entire universe.
