PC Stocks Sink Tech Issues

NEW YORK -- Technology issues slumped Thursday as computer-related stocks fell amid the latest round of price cuts.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 9.33 to 7683.24, and the Nasdaq slipped 13.70 to 1623.63. Trading was relatively quiet ahead of Friday's October unemployment report.

Computer makers were weak after IBM said it would offer three home PCs under $1,000 for the holiday season. Houston-based Compaq countered by slashing prices of its Presario computers by 15 percent to 25 percent.

Dell [DELL] was down 2 5/8 to 81, Compaq [CPQ] lost 1 1/2 to 65 7/16, Hewlett-Packard [HWP] fell 1 5/16 to 63 5/8, and IBM [IBM] slumped 1 to 101 1/2.

Gateway 2000 [GTW] was up 1/16 to 28 13/16, and Apple [AAPL] gained 5/8 to 19. Both companies will start offering its computers via the Web.

Computer retailer Tandy [TAN] was up 2 5/16 to 41 15/16 after reporting strong October same-store sales.

Intel [INTC] was down 1 to 73 5/8, and Microsoft [MSFT] fell 1 1/2 to 132 1/16.

Networking giants Cisco and 3Com were also lower. 3Com [COMS] fell 2 7/16 to 41, and Cisco [CSCO] slipped 3/4 to 84 11/16.

Among other movers, Applied Materials [AMAT] fell 2 1/16 to 36 3/8, and Netscape [NSCP] was up 1/16 to 33. Yahoo [YHOO] was down 7/8 to 52 3/4, and America Online [AOL] dipped 7/8 to 84.
