Fiorina wins the GOP primary to challenge Boxer; I can't believe she will win, but I suppose stranger things have happened, especially in CA.

Former Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Carly Fiorina will be the Republican Party nominee in the November race against Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer.

Fiorina was the top vote-getter in Tuesday's primary election in a Republican field that included former Rep. Tom Campbell and conservative Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine).

Fiorina, who spent more than $5.5 million of her own money on the campaign, attacked Campbell's record as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's top economic adviser. Campbell helped craft a state budget that included tax increases -- anathema to many conservative voters.

[Updated, 9:22 p.m.: In a speech to supporters in San Jose Tuesday, Campbell said he was worried about the future of the country. Although he urged them to support Fiorina, he said he was concerned that voters were being moved more by slogans than by candidates' experience.

"We're not at a good point in our political system....We need to have people with experience in government so we can learn from what we have done before. So I am worried."

He told the room that the "good news" was that the open primary measure, Proposition 14, was winning.]

Fiorina received a boost from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who endorsed her and recorded a phone message that went out to thousands of California Republican voters.

I can't remember ever meeting people in 3d who behave like the trolls on SI. I admit, I always feel I've been lucky that I have met so many wonderful people- and it's possible my Ky relatives might be like that- they DO send out the most moronic mass emails- with exclamation points, usually involving something already debunked at Snopes.

I think rationality takes the fun out of things. That's why SI is so full of what I call dog park politics. There is butt sniffing, and then either growling and nipping, or frisking and play. And there isn't much reason for it- nothing much is accomplished through the endless arguments- except the little doggies get to bond with their friends. We all come to our positions because they conform to what we are comfortable with. Some people seem to live in a constant state of fear- fear of crime (need guns), fear of outsiders (need giant fence, need to profile), fear of the other political party (They are TRAITORS out to destroy America.) I mean really- how do you live a happy life and believe that kind of schlock? But on the left we have folks who don't seem to understand the power of handouts, and that compassion needs to be structured so we don't encourage laziness, and that we need to plan to pay for things we want. I have to say, I prefer the errors of the left, but I do see both sides have problems. And if there was a middle way that would be nice, but the "middle" seems to be composed of people who really aren't very interested in things, and who are swayed by pure emotion.

But as you say, perhaps some day an honest and grounded poster will show up and really be informative without playing games. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that :-)
