Ascend Ports its Network Management Software to UNIX Using Bristol Technology's Wind/U

Business Wire via Dow Jones

RIDGEFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1997--Bristol Technology Inc., the
market leader in cross-platform development solutions, today announced that
Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASND), a leading provider of technology and
equipment solutions for telecommunications carriers, Internet service providers
(ISPs), and corporate customers worldwide, is currently shipping a UNIX version
of its NavisAccess network management software, which was ported using Bristol's
cross-platform development software.

Previously only available on the Windows NT platform, NavisAccess is the next
generation tool for managing carrier networks, Points of Presence (POPs) and
enterprise networks. NavisAccess is now available on Sun Solaris and HP-UX.

Speed-to-market of the UNIX product and the ability to quickly add new
features were key factors for Ascend, as competition in this market is so great.
With only a six-month window of opportunity, re-writing the application was
unfeasible.

According to Kevin Koenig, director of software development in Ascend's
Network Management Division, "We had limited resources and a half million lines
of code that we've written over the last five years. We've successfully taken
that code and ported it to two UNIX platforms in six months. Without Wind/U, we
estimate it would have taken two years."

Bristol's Wind/U family of products enables software developers to use a
single source code base for development on multiple platforms, including Windows
95, Windows NT, UNIX, OpenVMS and OS/390. The results are shorter development
cycles, lower software maintenance costs, and higher return on investment as
applications move quickly to market.
