Net is what's important. To use an extreme example to show the point in its strongest extent. If the government gave a company a penny in direct subsidies, and a penny in tax benefits, while the company paid a billion in normal taxes (which reasonable could count against the two pennies, but you could reasonably also exclude since other companies pay them as well), and $100bil in special taxes that just hit that company, then yes it received a subsidy but who cares. The reality would be that the government was draining resources from the company not giving to it. That's also true of the oil companies in the US, just not to the same extent.
