BP value sinks $17B yesterday

By PAUL THARP June 10, 2010
nypost.com

BP is gushing money faster than its out-of-control well is spewing oil - its stock value dropped an astounding $17 billion yesterday as it faced the prospect of going under water.

When BP's Gulf of Mexico drilling rig exploded in a fireball on April 20, its stock sold for $60.48 a share. It closed yesterday at $29.20.

That's a mind-numbing $100 billion loss to shareholders in only six weeks.

Investors stampeded away from the stock yesterday, with more than five times the usual number of shares trading.

When the smoke cleared, BP was down 16 percent, or $5.48, its lowest level in 15 years.

Wall Street analysts said they're beginning to fear what once was unthinkable -- that one of the biggest, most powerful and profitable companies on the planet could actually go bust.

Houston oil trader Matt Simmons told Fortune magazine that BP might file for bankruptcy in a month -- even before it finishes its three-month task of drilling two relief wells in a last attempt to stop the spill.

Between its own funds and insurance payouts, it would likely have the money to complete the job, but with not much left over.

"One really smart thing that [President] Obama did was about three weeks ago he forced BP CEO Tony Hayward to put in writing that BP would pay for every dollar of the cleanup," Simmons said.

"But there isn't enough money in the world to clean up the Gulf of Mexico. Once BP realizes the extent of this, my guess is they'll panic and go into Chapter 11."

Obama said he would have fired Hayward, who infuriated millions affected by the spill when he whined that he wanted "his life back."

Meanwhile, Louisiana residents fear they'll never get their lives or livelihoods back.

Experts believe that Hayward's departure at this late date would not help the company survive.

Another cloud on BP's horizon is a move in Congress -- with blessings from the White House -- to do away with a law capping its liability at $75 million.

The change, which can be made retroactive, would raise the cap to $10 billion. That, the experts say, could be the fatal blow.

BP's total liability could be as high as $177.6 billion, Goldman Sachs estimated.

That includes:

* Compensating workers for lost wages.

* Cleaning up the oil.

* Settling thousands of civil lawsuits from people who lost their livelihoods

* Paying US government fines.

BP is under growing political pressure to hold back paying $10 billion in dividends to stockholders.

"Shares are under pressure from the fear of whether BP can survive," said industry expert Jon Najarian.

"It is not just a rumor about the potential of a dividend cut. Now it's about the survivability of the company."

SEC examining Goldman Sachs' Hudson deals-FT
7:57am EDT
NEW YORK, June 10 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which charged Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) with fraud in April, is investigating another mortgage-linked deal once pitched by the Wall Street firm, the Financial Times reported, citing people close to the matter.

The SEC has been gathering information about Hudson Mezzanine Funding, a $2 billion collateralized debt obligation, but the probe was preliminary and there was no certainty it would lead to additional charges against Goldman, The Financial Times reported.

Goldman declined to comment on the report.

In April, U.S. securities regulators charged the powerful Wall Street bank with civil fraud in connection with the structuring and sale of another CDO called Abacus 2007.

The Financial Times said the Hudson probe is part of a wider investigation into CDO securities dealing on Wall Street.

On Wednesday, an Australian hedge fund sued Goldman over its investment in the Timberwolf CDO, claiming the subprime mortgage-linked security contributed to the fund's demise in 2007. [ID:nN09150585] (Reporting by Steve Eder, editing by Maureen Bavdek)

"with environmental "protection" like we got from her (thousands of barrels of Corexit dumped daily with her approval at first) who needs polluters?"
===

I'll have the link for this later. In the mean time, this is just insane.-BC
+++++++

In light of the red bloody color of the oil coming up from the gulf oil dump
BP is probably using some form of hydrogen sulfide (sewer gas, or something
producing sewer gas) very deadly. Though nobody knows the exact contents of
the chemical mix (trade secret you know) the following copied link does shed
some light on the subject

BP’s *latest oil spill response update for June 4th
says*<http://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/go/doc/2931/589583/>the
total amount of the dispersant used in the Gulf of Mexico more than
1,021,000 gallons.

But what most people don’t know is that the active ingredient of the toxic
chemical dispersant, which is up to 60% by volume, being sprayed by BP to
fight the Gulf oil spill is a *neurotoxin
pesticide*<http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051>that
is acutely toxic to both human and aquatic life, causes cancer, causes
damage to internal organs such as the liver and kidneys simply by absorbing
it through the skin and may cause reproductive side effects.

In fact the neurotoxin pesticide that is lethal to 50% of life in
concentrations as little as 2.6 parts per million has been *banned for use
in the UK*<http://www.marinemanagement.org.uk/protecting/pollution/documents/approval_approved_products.pdf>since
1998 because it failed the UK
*“Rocky shore test”*<http://www.cefas.co.uk/publications/techrep/tech102.pdf>which
assures that the dispersant does not cause a “significant deleterious
ecological change” – or to put that in layman’s terms it can kill off the
entire food chain.

Corexit has also earned the highest EPA warning label for toxicity which
means the effects of the toxic chemicals to the eye are corrosive resulting
in irreversible destruction of ocular tissue and other tissue with corneal
involvement along with an burning that can persist for more than 21 days
and effects to human skin are corrosive resulting in tissue destruction
into the dermis and/or scarring.

Corexit was widely used after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill and according to a
literature review performed by the group the Alaska Community Action on
Toxics was later linked with widespread long lasting health impacts in
people including respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood
disorders.

The “Human Health Hazards” are said to be “Chronic” for Corexit EC9527A
according to the EPA.

*So What Are These Dispersants Made Of That Makes Them Such a Powerful
Neurotoxin Pesticide?*

The main ingredients of Corexit is
*2-Butoxyethanol*<http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-2_Butoxyethanol-9923187>which
can make up to 60% of the dispersant and is known to be toxic to
blood, kidneys, liver, and the central nervous system (CNS).

2-Butoxyethanol is also known to cause cancer, birth defects and has been
found to cause genetic mutations and is a *delayed chronic health hazard as
well as an environmental hazardous
material*<http://www.thisoldgrout.com/msds/stoneprep.pdf>

*Corexit also contains Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Mercury, and
Cyanide*<http://www.epa.gov/emergencies/content/ncp/products/corex952.htm>
.

*How effective is Corexit in dispersing Gulf crude?*

*Corexit 9500 is only 54.7%
effective*<http://www.epa.gov/emergencies/content/ncp/products/corex950.htm>and
*Corexit 9527A is 63.4%
effective*<http://www.epa.gov/emergencies/content/ncp/products/corex952.htm>in
dispersing the crude oil found off the shores of South Louisiana.

BP has sprayed both *Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527 into the Gulf of Mexico
to disperse the
oil*<http://views.washingtonpost.com/climate-change/post-carbon/2010/05/epa_demands_less_toxic_dispersant.html>both
of which have been
*banned in the UK since 1998 for failure to pass the Rocky Shores
Test*<http://www.marinemanagement.org.uk/protecting/pollution/documents/approval_approved_products.pdf>
.

By *BP’s own admission
Corexit*<http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/dispersants/5-21bp-response.pdf>has
the potential for
*bioaccumulation*
<http://toxics.usgs.gov/definitions/bioaccumulation.html>meaning it
has the potential to accumulate int the tissues of organism
beginning with the first organism in a food chain.

*Why allow the use of these toxic dispersants?*

Well the EPA has ordered BP to stop using the dispersants but *BP has
refused*<http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2010/05/22/bp-feds-middle-finger-continue-toxic-dispersants/>
.

The EPA justifies the use of dispersants because they are less toxic than
oil and the cause less of an environment impact that oil along the
coastline.

However the choice of using Corexit contradicts both of those
justifications.

Corexit is lethal in as little as 2.6 parts per million where oil is lethal
in 11 parts per million meaning that Corexit is over 4 times more toxic than
oil.

Furthermore scientific studies show that* oil dispersed with Corexit is 11
times more lethal than oil
alone<http://scienceblogs.com/speakeasyscience/2010/05/a_lethal_concentration.php>
*.

In fact the *study
referenced*<http://etd.lsu.edu/docs/available/etd-1113103-122552/unrestricted/Liu_thesis.pdf>showed
that crude oil was lethal at 4250 parts per million to killifish but
combination of oil mixed with Corexit was lethal in as little as 317.7 ppm.

“Dispersed oils were more toxic than crude oils,” noted the report.

The other justification of lessening the environmental impact along the
shoreline doesn’t hold up either as the reason Corexit was banned in the UK
is because it was in fact shown to have a “significant deleterious
ecological change” on the shoreline.

The fact Corexit is 4 times as toxic as oil and up to 11 times as toxic when
combined with oil it literally makes no sense to allow the use of such a
toxic chemical that can “delete” the ecological systems along the Gulf
coast.

A report in the journal *Environmental
Toxicology*<http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/71006506/abstract>a
decade ago concluded that lethality levels in “dispersed oil
combinations
were significantly more toxic to these organisms than .. crude oil.” *Another
study* <http://bit.ly/aTruF6>, this time of snails and amphipods reached
exactly the same conclusion.

*What are the long term effects of Corexit?*

The EPA has stated over and over that the *long term effects of the use of
Corexit are unknown*
<http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/dispersants.html#surface2>yet there is
plenty of data documenting the long term effects on humans (see
below).

Further making the EPA claims questionable is EPA’s Deepwater horizon
response sites site clearly states that between 1 million and 2.5 million
gallons of the neurotoxin pesticide *Corexit was used in the 1979 ixtoc oil
spill* <http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/dispersants.html#general2> which makes it
unfathomable that the EPA doesn’t know what the long term effects are of a
chemical that has been widely used, and eventually banned in certain
countries, over a period of 30 years.

To the contrary of the EPA’s statement scientific studies widely state *Corexit
9527 has been tested extensively in the laboratory and used on oil spills
since 1978*<http://publicfiles.dep.state.fl.us/DEAR/Oil%20Spill/Bioremediation%20and%20Dispersant%20Literature/Toxicity%20of%20Superdispersant-25%20and%20Corexit%209527.pdf>and
a considerable number of toxicity reports exist concerning a wide
variety of species.

So why does the Federal Government continue to tell us the the long term
effects of the dispersant usage are unknown?

Why does the Federal Government continue to pretend like they know so little
about the dispersant BP is being used?

*What are the chemical components of the dispersants COREXIT 9500 and
COREXIT 9527?*

While the main ingredient which makes up to 60% of Corexit is reason enough
to cause concern.

If you dig any more dirt on these let me know.

The components of COREXIT 9500 and 9527 are:
*CAS Registry Number* *Chemical Name* 57-55-6

*The have also been found to contain Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Mercury,
and Cyanide among other heavy metals*

*What are the Chronic Health effects of Corexit?*

Here are some of the highlights from the *MSDS for the active ingredient
(2-butoxyethanol) – of Corexit (up to 60% by
volume)*<http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-2_Butoxyethanol-9923187>

*Note To Readers:*

*Despite the comment in this opinion 2-Butoxyethanol – The main
ingredient in Corexit – is listed as both a neurotoxin and a
pesticide<http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051>Missmoa
should do some research on sources beside Wikipedia, like the dozens
listed in the post.*

——–
The active ingredient in the Corexit used, 2-Butoxyethanol, is NOT a
“neurotoxin pesticide”. It is a solvent agent, used in household products.
Check Wikipedia for a start. You somehow managed to confuse it with a
completely different product, the bactericid Corexit 7670, which has
completely different ingredients, and does not contain 2-Butoxyethanol at
all. It is just plain wrong.

Do some fact checking before posting.

Wikipedia is not necessarily a credible source of information.

2-Butoxyethanol is listed as a neurotoxin on the NeuroResearch page at
neuroassist.com. It is listed as a chemical in
the PAN Pesticides Database found at
pesticideinfo.org .

The EPA doesn’t list 2-Butoxyethanol as an ingredient of Corexit-9500 –
the dispersant being used in the Gulf. The solvent category is empty,
labeled as “Confidential”. Just because 2-Butoxyethanol is listed as an
ingredient in Corexit 7670 doesn’t mean that it can’t be hidden under the
Confidential “Solvent” section.

It’s actually the US government that is spraying it – the EPA both
permits and arranges sales for these dispersant’s.

And I would not rely on NPR or the Sierra Club as sources. Both are
funded by the General Electric Foundation. General Electric received 138
Billion bucks from the FDIC to support the Obama Administration position. GE
receives taxpayer grants to still corn fuel. It takes 1.6 gallons of diesel
fuel to make 1 Gal of corn fuel (IOW US taxpayers are paying GE to
manufacture fewer BTU’s than the BTU’s consumed by the manufacturing
process. GE want taxpayer to pay for low efficiency wind turbines. GE
competes with big oil and is shamelessly using this opportunity to make the
pitch. GE’s stock is falling through the floor. GE is a standing member in
the War Industrial Complex. GE will scream to high heaven about a 100 birds
while failing to mention the GE Gatling guns that have helped murder
millions of Iraqi (no WMD folks) and has peppered Iraq and Afghanistan with
so much Depleted Uranium they glow from space in the X-Ray spectrum.

Outraged by a few tar balls and oily birds – such patriots – but nothing
about millions murdered innocents and birth defects due to the toxic affects
of GU dispensed DU – shameless! (Source:

(Note: In the words of a high ranking official of Goldman Sucks in an
email to his girlfriend after braging that they had shorted the Gulf oil
field prior to the event; "Too bad for the birdies and the fishes" and the
population of the eastern seaboard, I might add.)
