I appreciate your comment. If a "bet" is the amount you're prepared to lose on the trade, it seems to me that a bet on the short-side is little different than a bet on the long-side. Why the need for exotic products ? Maybe if a looked at them more closely I wouldn't need to ask ! LOL

The more the leverage on ETFs, the more the leakage and hence the shorter the time period they should be held.
