How do we know there were new historical highs from the 1980's on? Or if there were, how significant were they?

This chart shows no new historical highs (original data in blue) .... until the older data was adjusted downward (adjusted data in red):

Sure this is only one station, but I've seen lots of other examples of this. This kind of thing done enough makes historical comparisons crap.
