Despite this nasty aberration in the GOM the wealthier, that is to say the more capitalistic countries, are better than they were fifty years ago.

Yes "we" have! I lived on Lake Washington as a kid and because most houses surrounding the lake were on septic systems, the lake was pretty dirty. A person couldn't go swimming or run a boat close to shore without getting tangled up in milfoil and the lake was plagued by large algae blooms in the summer. The county issued a bond and brought sewers in to 90% of the area. Today, the lake is crystal clear and species that were dying off have made an incredible recovery. There are still a few problems, but those problems are being addressed by the proper authorities.

Being from South Africa, I can understand why you see nothing but environmental degradation when you look at the surroundings.
