A team of U.S. geologists and military officials have discovered about $1 trillion in untapped mineral wealth in Afghanistan, a find that could drastically alter the economy of the historically impoverished Central Asian nation, according to a report Sunday. The deposits include "huge veins" of iron, copper, cobalt and gold, the New York Times reported, citing U.S. officials. Among the discoveries was a large amount of lithium -- a key material for batteries used in autos and high-tech devices -- that could turn Afghanistan into the "Saudi Arabia of lithium," according to a Pentagon memo quoted in the report. The Afghan economy has traditionally relied on illicit opium trade, as well as the export of handicrafts and fruits.
